Draught proofing

Are you feeling cold draughts in your home, even when the heating is on? draught-proofing is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to make your home feel warmer and more comfortable.

By sealing up the unwanted gaps and cracks that let cold air in and warm air out, you can dramatically improve your home’s energy efficiency, reduce noise, and save money on your heating bills.

The Benefits

Draught-proofing is a quick fix that can have significant benefits:

Lower Energy Bills: Draught-proofing windows and doors alone can save you around £40 a year. Sealing an unused chimney can save an additional £15.

Increased Comfort: By stopping cold air from entering your home, you will eliminate chilly draughts and make your living spaces feel warmer and cosier.

Reduces Noise: Draught-proofing also helps to block out unwanted outside noise, making your home quieter and more peaceful.

Quick and Cost-Effective: Many draught-proofing solutions are inexpensive and can be installed quickly, offering a fast return on your small investment.

Protect Your Home: By preventing uncontrolled airflow, you can also reduce the risk of damp and mould caused by moisture fluctuations.

What does draught-proofing look like and where does it fit in your house?

Windows

Special draught-proofing strips stick around the edges of your windows. These look like rolls of tape or foam and can be matched to the colour of your window frame.

If your window doesn’t open, a tube of sealant can be used instead. Sealant comes in a variety of colours to match your window frame.

Doors

You can draught-proof your doors in a few ways:

One of the easiest ways is to cover the keyhole with a metal cover. This moves around so you can open your door with a key.

You can also use a letterbox flap or brush to stop any draughts.

Draught-proofing strips can be added to the edges and bottom of your door. You can also use foam or brush-like strips, like those used for windows.

Floors

To stop cold air from coming up through your floor, special strips or foam will cover any gaps where the floor meets the walls and between ground floor floorboards.

If there are bigger holes or cracks, you might need to fill them with a paste or putty.

York Energy Advice can provide free draught-proofing for residents on a low income, find out more here.

How It Fits in Your Home

How It Fits in Your Home Draught-proofing is a versatile solution that can be applied to almost any home, from old properties with sash windows to modern homes with new doors.

  • Windows: Gaps can be sealed with self-adhesive foam strips or brush strips.

  • Doors: You can use brush strips for the bottom of the door and self-adhesive seals for the frame. Don't forget to install a brush or flap on your letterbox and a cover on your keyhole.

  • Floors and Skirting Boards: Gaps can be filled with flexible fillers to prevent cold air from seeping in from below.

  • Chimneys: If you have an disused fireplace, a chimney balloon or cap can stop warm air from escaping.
